Class 3 Shingles

The Honest Baseline.

Impact-rated. Cost-effective. The right call for some roofs — and the wrong call for others. We’ll tell you which one is yours.

WHAT CLASS 3 MEANS

UL 2218 is the impact-resistance test for asphalt shingles. A 1.75-inch steel ball gets fired at the shingle at terminal velocity. Class 3 shingles survive that test.

Class 4 shingles survive a 2-inch ball. Class 3 is a real upgrade over uncategorized shingles. It’s just not the top of the chart.

WHEN CLASS 3 IS THE RIGHT CALL

Lower hail-risk geography

some zip codes outside the storm belt have a meaningfully lower hail probability per year, and the Class 4 upcharge math doesn’t pencil out

Tighter budget

Class 3 + our New Warranty is still a much better roof than “cheapest bid” Class 3 with no warranty

Older home with planned sale

if you’re selling in <5 years and the carrier discount doesn’t matter to you, Class 3 may be the smart play

We’ll run the math with you honestly.

WHEN MOST OF OUR CUSTOMERS UPGRADETO CLASS 4 INSTEAD

  • They live in OK, KS, MO, or AR — hail country
  • Their carrier offers a 10–30% premium discount for Class 4 (which compounds annually)
  • They’ve already paid one deductible in the last 5 years
  • They plan to be in the house long enough that the math compounds in their favor

OUR HONEST POSITION

If you ask three other roofers in this region and one of them says “Class 4 doesn’t matter, save your money,” they’re either uninformed or they don’t have a Class 4 installer crew. Either way, that’s a signal. Read more about choosing a roofer.

We install Class 3. We just rarely recommend it in this region.
